Joshua Karlsson

Biography

Joshua joined the PAM group in January 2023 as a postdoctoral research associate. He graduated from the University of York with a BSc in Chemistry and Imperial College London with an MRes in Green Chemistry in 2013 and 2014 respectively. He went on to complete a PhD at Newcastle University in 2018, supervised by Prof. Anthony Harriman.

Joshua’s PhD studies covered a wide range of topics on the molecular photophysics of organic dyes pertinent to solar cells and medical imaging. His expertise are in detailed interrogation of excited state properties for organic/inorganic chromophores in simple and complex environments ranging from in-solution to thin films, solid matrices and devices.

Joshua held a postdoctoral research associate role in the group of Prof. Elizabeth Gibson at Newcastle University from 2019 to 2022, where extensive work was done investigating new systems for photoelectrocatalysis as well as integrating polyoxometalates into photocatalytic systems.

Joshua hails from the United Kingdom originally but is half Finnish and has split his time between the two countries growing up. Out of the lab Joshua enjoys theatre, music and can sometimes be found working on various mechanical projects.

Current Research

Joshua will be characterising the optical properties of spectral conversion materials as part of the SPECTRACON project.
