Tom Williamson

Biography

Tom is a PhD student co-supervised by Professor Rachel Evans (Photoactive Materials Group) and Professor Louise Hirst (Space Photovoltaics Group). He is funded through the EPSRC CDT in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NanoDTC), through which he earned an MRes with Distinction in 2024. Before joining the NanoDTC, Tom graduated with a first-class BA and MSci in Natural Sciences (Materials Science) from Cambridge in 2023, gaining the departments Armourers & Brasiers Prize.

Tom has experience as an undergraduate supervisor and is interested in engaging with science policy. Outside of science, he is a musician and holds the Brian Moore accompanist scholarship at Wolfson College.

Current Research

Tom’s PhD investigates the compatibility of photopolymer structures for passive radiative cooling of photovoltaics. He hopes to develop an intuition for the nano-/micro-structural variations in select photopolymer films and how their surface texture can be controlled via photopolymerisation. Through experiment and simulation, he aims to show optimal designs for photovoltaic compatibility by understanding the spectral requirements in the visible and infrared.
